Bologna, Italy – 27th June 2023 — Cubbit, the innovator behind Europe's first geo-distributed cloud storage enabler, today announced the creation of its advisory board. Its first members to join are Alec Ross, Mikko Suonenlahti, and Nicolas Ott. These advisors will support Cubbit through its international growth and will identify strategic opportunities for the company's development. Ross, Suonenlahti, and Ott have long-standing track records in holding leading roles in the technology, cloud, and telco sectors.
"In Alec, Mikko, and Nicolas we have found proven international leaders who can support Cubbit’s ambitious expansion across Europe and into the US," explains Stefano Onofri, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Cubbit. "Thanks to the wealth of innovation, knowledge, and drive that the Cubbit team brings to the table, we have developed an enabling technology that can be applied across multiple industrial and strategic sectors like telcos, defence, manufacturing, and banking. Our brand new international advisory board will be crucial to developing strategic technology integrations that vastly expand our market footprint."
"Since the launch of Next Generation Cloud Pioneers, our programme dedicated to Italian companies 18 months ago, we have been getting very positive feedback from the market, with more than 130 companies joining the network. Now we are preparing to expand our offer across Europe," explains Alessandro Cillario, Co-CEO and Co-founder of Cubbit. "The demand for technologies that guarantee data sovereignty and high security brings us to a key stage in our growth process; the birth of our advisory board is the first step. More key announcements will follow in the coming weeks."
Meet the first members of the Advisory Board
Alec Ross is an American technology policy expert, entrepreneur, and author. Alec served as Senior Advisor for Innovation for Hillary Clinton during her tenure as Secretary of State, and he was the coordinator for the Technology & Media Policy Committee during Barack Obama's presidential campaign in 2008. He is a board member of Amplo, a global venture capital firm, and sits on other boards of companies specialising in technology, finance, education, human resources, and cyber security.
"The cloud is a $500 billion-plus market, and its value will exceed $1 trillion by 2027. It is rare that in such a rich market, there is so little competition: apart from Google, Amazon, and Microsoft taking a 65% slice, the rest is an open ocean where American and Chinese companies compete and where there is a lack of European presence. Over the years, in more than $1 billion worth of investments, I have participated across 40 companies on 5 continents, and noticed common characteristics among successful companies. I see this ambition and skill level in the Cubbit team, and I believe it can truly become the European challenger in this market. As an advisor, I will bring my expertise in building relationships with large enterprises."
Mikko Suonenlahti, from Finland, is a business builder in his fifth decade of supporting tech founders that invent the future, having served on approximately 100 boards in eight countries. He has been a lead investor in the first institutional financing rounds of two businesses, which have reached a value of more than €1 billion, and two Nasdaq US IPOs.
“I am passionate about adding value to strategy, finance, corporate governance, and IPO readiness. Cubbit is unique, as it has its own IP, which enables the continuation of Moore’s Law of Storage. During my career, the price of 1 TB of storage has declined from $33 million M( ! ) to about $11 per month, and Cubbit is considerably driving the price down further.”
Nicolas Ott, from France, is currently Senior Advisor to Ardian Infrastructure in telecommunications (one of the world's largest private investment funds), partner of Inovexus early stage VC fund, and independent director at Totem Group (Orange group's towerco). Nicolas counts a long experience in the telco and IoT sectors. He was Managing Director in Arqiva Telecom & M2M (UK), a Board Member of Wireless Broadband Alliance, and Vice President in Strategy, Regulation, Planning & Public Affairs in EE Ltd (UK).
"The steadily increasing ubiquity of 5G and FTTx networks make visible opportunities for telcos to generate new revenue streams and reduce costs, such as 5G private networks which lead to the creation of thousands of terabytes of data at the edge, and the growing need to deploy edge cloud computing to deliver satisfactory application performance. With Cubbit, two services are enabled in a single platform: cloud services with low opex and capex, and edge services to intercept edge demand and enable 5G use cases. Cubbit's technology can be concretely applied to create a distributed cloud storage network without complications in IT-side management. As an advisor to the board, I will bring my expertise from the telco world."
Since the announcement of the Next Generation Cloud Pioneers program in April 2022, Cubbit now serves more than 130+ companies, enterprises, and institutions, including Aeroporto Marconi di Bologna, Amadori, Bonfiglioli, CNP Vita (Unicredit Group), Granarolo, Marcheno Municipality, and SCM Group.
While expanding the team, Cubbit is evolving its technology to become an enabler of multi-cloud and edge solutions. For more information, please visit: https://www.cubbit.io/
About Cubbit
Cubbit, Europe's first geo-distributed cloud storage enabler, offers Cubbit DS3: a multi-tenant S3-compatible object store optimised for edge and multi-cloud use cases. Unlike traditional cloud storage, Cubbit’s technology doesn't store data in a few centralised data centres. Instead, files are encrypted, fragmented, redundantly stored, and distributed across geo-distributed networks called Swarms; this reduces the data risk around downtime, ransomware, and hacker attacks. The Swarm is built on recycled and dedicated computing and storage resources, helping to optimise the storage infrastructure of companies and enterprises at a fraction of the cost of traditional cloud providers while guaranteeing complete data sovereignty and avoiding lock-in. Cubbit, a Gaia-X partner, is a leading European deep tech scaleup company that has raised $10M+ and expanded its presence in 70+ countries, where its technology has been deployed with over 5,000 active nodes. In 2022, Cubbit launched its B2B solution that now counts more than 130 corporate and enterprise customers. Cubbit has received awards from CERN, Mastercard, TIM, Next Generation Internet, and Climate KIC. It is one of three winners of the EIT Digital Challenge Award 2021 given to the best European scaleups, and was chosen by EIC Scaling Up among the top 30 European deep tech scaleups.
About Next Generation Cloud Pioneers
Launched in April 2022, Next Generation Cloud Pioneers is the Cubbit programme in which a selected number of pioneering Italian companies adopted Cubbit's geo-distributed cloud object storage product to create the first private B2B network in Europe.
