Bologna, Italy — 30 September 2025 — Cubbit, the first geo-distributed cloud storage enabler, and Planetek, a distinguished player in Earth Observation (EO), geospatial analytics, and mission software, part of D-Orbit Group, today announced the signing of an agreement to create an infrastructure for the storage and management of geospatial data. The agreement showcases the integration of fully European technologies, with the aim of securing data in a strategic sector such as space observation. The first deployment will involve the company Planetek Hellas, which operates in Greece.

Planetek was seeking a secure, sovereign platform for the backup and long-term archiving of satellite data — capable of supporting the full operational cycle, from data collection and transformation to sharing. The company also required a scalable, multi-site infrastructure suited to managing large-scale space projects distributed across multiple sites.

Over the years, Planetek has evaluated various traditional on-premises object storage systems. While these solutions ensured control, they came with limitations in terms of cost, inflexibility, and operational complexity — often requiring significant IT resources. Given the current geopolitical landscape, public cloud was not an option due to concerns over data sovereignty, regulatory compliance, and economic constraints.

With Cubbit’s DS3 Composer, Planetek’s customers will be able to benefit from a flexible, geo-distributed cloud object storage platform with full national data sovereignty and no technological lock-in. The initial capacity is 3.5 petabytes, with plans to expand to 5 petabytes in the coming years. Data will be securely stored within the national territory and made globally accessible whenever required.

Cubbit develops cloud storage solutions that ensure maximum resilience, sovereignty, and cost efficiency. Data is encrypted, fragmented, and distributed across multiple network nodes: never exposed in full and always accessible.

“This is the first in a series of projects in the space industry that we are working on, and which we hope to announce in the coming months,” said Alessandro Cillario, co-CEO and co-founder of Cubbit. “In this sector, the need to securely store and share data is directly linked to stringent requirements for data sovereignty and control over one’s technological infrastructure. Today, Cubbit is the perfect answer for data storage, both in the space sector and more broadly in the European institutional and governmental domain. We are therefore delighted that Planetek has chosen our solution for its strategic needs.”

"With Cubbit, we’ve built a solid and flexible infrastructure that enables us to meet the highest security requirements in the strategic field of Earth Observation,” said Sergio Samarelli, CTO of Planetek. “The ability to maintain full control of the data within our technological perimeter, and the sovereignty guarantee offered to our customers, gives us a key strategic advantage.”
